Airmen Dormitory Bldg, Westover Air Reserve Base – Progressive Collapse Analysis

Location: Westover Air Reserve Base, MA

FDR Engineers (FDR) provided peer review of a 3-D computer model of a building built in Extreme Loading® for Structures and the associated UFC code checks to ensure that the structure had adequate flexural resistance to bridge over a missing vertical support in multiple scenarios.  The building was scheduled for renovations and was required to be upgraded to resist progressive collapse per UFC 4-023-03 (2010), Design of Buildings to Resist Progressive Collapse. The analyses followed the Alternate Path Method and the Nonlinear Dynamic Procedure as described in the UFC.  Primary structural components of the building in the computer model included: flat plate slabs, perimeter beams, and columns.  Material models and loading followed the guidelines provided in the UFC.

Model review included verification of overall and detailed dimensions, reinforcement details, loads, material properties and meshing. The code check review included deformation-controlled actions and force controlled actions. SpE documented its findings and worked with the client to ensure the final model and set of calculations met all acceptance criteria for progressive collapse resistance requirements or a reinforcement plan was recommended to meet UFC acceptance criteria.
